When the shortlist for the 2025 Highways Heroes Awards was announced, one name immediately stood out for judges and colleagues alike:

Billy Miller, whose quick thinking and compassion transformed what could have been a tragic Friday morning into a story of decisive, lifesaving action.

On 21 March 2025, just after 7:30am, routine operations at a Midlands depot took a sudden and unexpected turn. A lorry driver delivering goods to a neighbouring business fell while climbing down from his cab, striking his head on the kerb and losing consciousness. In the critical moments that followed, Billy — who had only just started his shift — became the first responder on the scene.

While others paused in shock, Billy moved without hesitation. Reaching the injured driver within seconds, he took control of the situation with a level of calm typically seen in seasoned emergency professionals. He checked the driver’s condition, administered first aid and ensured the man remained conscious and reassured while emergency services were called. Witnesses later described a tense and distressing scene, but noted that Billy’s composure helped steady not only the injured driver, but the concerned bystanders gathering nearby.

What makes Billy’s actions even more remarkable is the modesty with which he later reported the incident. In his timesheet, he recorded the event simply as: “provided first aid to a member of the public on the estate.” Those who saw what happened say this description barely conveys the severity of the situation — or the critical role Billy played in preventing it from escalating.

Colleagues who were present that morning praised his instinctive leadership, clear thinking and compassion.

Billy stayed with the driver until paramedics arrived, offering reassurance and keeping him alert, before quietly returning to his duties with no expectation of praise or recognition.

This humility, combined with his decisive action, embodies exactly what the Heroes Awards were created to honour: ordinary industry professionals who rise to extraordinary challenges. Billy’s conduct serves as a powerful reminder that heroism is not always loud or dramatic — sometimes it looks like staying calm under pressure, doing the right thing without being asked, and putting another person's wellbeing before your own schedule.

Now entering their fifth year, the Highways Heroes Awards celebrate individuals and teams who make a meaningful difference across the sector — from lifesaving interventions to driving positive change in safety, culture and community impact. The 2025 winners will be announced at the London Hilton on Park Lane on 26 November, where Billy’s story will stand among the most inspiring examples of humanity and professional integrity in our industry today.
